I am not sure. On one hand its good to get it done with as soon as possible, on the other it is too early in the morning for my taste.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but can you explain what quals are – are they like comps? How many do you have to do and how/when do you find out if you pass?

I am not sure what comps are. Quals is short for Qualifying exam. While exact structure and composition varies with each dept and univ, they are basically the first of the 3 exams a student needs to take before they can get their hands on their PhDs.
I don’t know when I will hear about the results. Typically you can get the “unofficial” results within the next day or two, but there have been cases in my dept where they have told the student the result a few mins after the exam.

Zelda – It is my understanding that quals and comps are similar. I think the terminology is different depending on the field.

The other two will be the General Exam, where you propose your research ideas, and the defense, where you defend you research.
